Roots & shoots
Mentally I'm here (you, too?) so let's skip the intro this week. Ready steady go:
Seven forms of sustenance
- Do not adjust your screen: Reading Rainbow is coming back with actual butterfly Mychal the Librarian at the helm, a pairing sure to be no less iconic than pb&j, Hepburn and Tracy, Lenny Kravitz and a large scarf.
- Can we take a moment to consider the improbability of being alive in the same timeline as Jane Goodall? Can we keep her work going, please?
- Here's death doula Alua Arthur with a beautiful assemblage—at turns devastating and comforting—of art about grief.
- You'll rarely, if ever, catch me arguing that there's just one way to do something, and that of course includes effecting change on a broad scale. Since a lot of us need, quite critically, to move differently than we used to, it feels important to stay open to all kinds of avenues and share them with one another. Mileage varies from person to person; with that in mind, meet the Craftivist Collective. For a deeper dive, here's a free course.
- A developer is working on a DIY slop filter (by way of a Chrome extension) that removes sponsored and AI-generated content from your Pinterest feed (if you're still using it these days, that is... no judgement, so am I!). It's called "Not Pinterested." You can sign up for the beta version here. Maybe it'll expand toward other, less malevolent browsers at some point, too.
- Want to come to art school with me? Here's a piece we read and discussed this week from Nuar Alsadir about egoism, framed environments, and finding your inner clown.
- SpEaKiNg oF fRaMiNg yOuR eNvIrOnMeNt (tortured segue, sorry), when I'm puttering at home and need a full vibe shift, putting on a DJ Afrosia set in the background usually does the trick. Stretch your neck and take your pick from some midtempo '90s r&b, early-aughts slow grooves, or future beats. And if you know someone throwing a party in Arkansas, tell them to hire her asap.
Onward—
"The longer I live, the more deeply I learn that love—whether we call it friendship or family or romance—is the work of mirroring and magnifying each other's light."
—James Baldwin
